Using the EZ Rule: A Guide for Race Committees

We understand and deeply appreciate the countless hours Race Committees volunteer to ensure fair and fun races. The Ez Toolbox is here to support RCs by:

  • Making race management enjoyable and accessible at any experience level.
  • Providing clear information, coaching, and requested tools for better race execution.

To learn more or discuss available tools, contact the EZ Team.

How the EZ Rule Supports Fairer Racing

The EZ Rule provides Race Committees with tools to ensure fair and balanced racing by enabling them to:

  • Create better class groupings for more equitable competition.
  • Adjust for wind conditions by selecting the appropriate windspeed.
  • Choose course configurations to match the sailing angles of the day.
  • Select the most suitable scoring method: Time on Distance (ToD), Time on Time (ToT), or others.

How EZ Works for Organizing Authorities

  1. Boat Ratings:
  2. Each boat’s certificate includes a set of rating numbers reflecting its speed potential, based on windspeed and sailing angles.
  3. Class and Division Setup:
  4. Using these ratings, the Race Committee organizes entries into classes and divisions based on their speed potential.
  5. Race Day Configuration:
  6. On the day of the race, the Race Committee selects:
  7. Windspeed: Ranging from 4 to 24 knots.
  8. Course Type: Options include windward-leeward, point-to-point, or mixed courses with varying percentages of reaching, beating, or running.
  9. Scoring:
  10. The Race Committee chooses a scoring method—ToD or ToT—to match the course and conditions. Scoring data can be updated and posted in real-time as boats finish.
  11. (A guide to selecting the best scoring method will be available soon.)

How the EZ VPP Levels the Playing Field

The EZ Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) uses data to estimate each boat's performance potential based on:

  • Wind direction (upwind, reaching, or downwind).
  • Wind speed (4 to 24+ knots).

The VPP offers a fair handicap system by accounting for varying conditions on the course.

For a deeper understanding, Race Committee members can request to see a boat’s 'Polars', which many skippers include with their rating certificate. These graphical charts show potential boat speeds for various wind speeds and sailing angles, helping RCs visualize how each boat is expected to perform under ideal conditions.

By using the EZ Toolbox, Race Committees can confidently manage races that are fair, fun, and tailored to the day's conditions.
